Vol. Science · Astronomy · How stars shine
A star shines because the product nucleus weighs less than the pieces that made it. The missing mass is energy, E = Δm c². Pick a reaction. The desk multiplies AME2020 atomic masses by the 2022 CODATA energy of one atomic mass unit, 931.49410372 MeV. Four hydrogen atoms to helium-4 release 26.7310 MeV. Deuterium plus tritium releases 17.5893 MeV. The binding-energy curve climbs to the iron group and turns down. In that table ⁶²Ni is the highest point, 8794.5555 keV per nucleon, with ⁵⁶Fe at 8790.3563 keV and ⁵⁸Fe between them at 8792.2534 keV. The Sun’s nominal luminosity, IAU 2015 Resolution B3, is 3.828×10²⁶ W. That wattage is 4.259×10⁹ kg of mass each second, and the hydrogen that supplies it is 0.712% of its mass — 0.7% to one digit after the decimal. How long the fuel lasts is the stellar lifetime desk. Where the light sits on temperature and luminosity is the HR diagram. The spectrum of the hydrogen is the spectra desk. The QCD binding inside one proton, a different ledger, is the Standard Model desk.
Educational calculator. Not a stellar-evolution model, not a reaction network, and not a measured solar luminosity. The nominal luminosity is a conversion constant. Neutrinos are named and not subtracted. The hue of a star is not drawn here.

Each point is [Z m(¹H) + (A−Z) m(n) − m(A,Z)] c² / A, with the atomic masses on this page. The AME2020 column, in keV, is the check: ⁶²Ni 8794.5555, ⁵⁸Fe 8792.2534, ⁵⁶Fe 8790.3563.

The hydrogen bar is the full width. The converted-mass bar is 0.712% of that width, at every luminosity. Sliding changes the kilograms per second. It does not change the fraction. 0.712% is 0.7% to one digit after the decimal.
Two chains, then the heavy elements
pp and CNO are the same net masses. Both turn four hydrogen nuclei into one helium-4. The CNO cycle uses carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen as catalysts and hands them back, so the mass defect on this page is one number, 26.7310 MeV. Adelberger et al. 2011 put the division in the standard solar model at 99% pp and about 1% from the CN cycle. Heavier main-sequence stars are powered mainly by CNO, because that energy generation rises much more steeply with temperature: about T18 against about T4 for the pp chain, at solar-core temperature. Their figure shows the Sun on the pp side. This page does not read a crossing temperature off that figure. NASA’s Sun facts put the core near 15 million °C, hot enough for hydrogen to fuse to helium.
The curve says which way pays. Binding energy per nucleon rises from deuterium to the iron group, so fusing light nuclei releases energy. It falls again toward lead and uranium, so fission of those heavy nuclei also releases energy. AME2020’s own column peaks at nickel-62, 8794.5555 keV per nucleon. Iron-58 is 8792.2534 keV. Iron-56 is 8790.3563 keV. The familiar iron peak is this neighborhood. Nickel-62 is the highest point in the column, not a rounding of iron-56.
Heavier than iron needs neutrons. Fusion stops being a profit past that peak. Burbidge, Burbidge, Fowler, and Hoyle (1957) named the two neutron-capture paths that build most of the heavier nuclei: the s-process, slow enough that a nucleus can decay before the next neutron arrives, and the r-process, rapid, in a flood of neutrons. They associated the slow path with giant stars and the rapid path with supernova conditions. A neutron-star merger has since been watched doing r-process work. Abbott et al. 2017 reported GW170817, and Pian et al. 2017 identified r-process material in its kilonova. This page does not split the heavy elements into percentages between mergers and supernovae.
