Day for Night — the crown you can see from here

On a clear Peninsula or South Bay night you can look northwest and find a pale, moving crown on the San Francisco skyline — Jim Campbell’s Day for Night on Salesforce Tower. It is serious public art. It is also, for some people who live tens of miles away, a nightly reminder that the metro still owns the dark. This page holds both truths. A night landmark across the Bay

Campbell, the city — 95008, Pruneyard country, Union Avenue, the valley floor — does not sit under the tower. The crown is a distant object: a 1,070-foot office building in SoMa whose top six floors were designed to glow. Jim Campbell’s portfolio and the official Salesforce Tower artwork page both say the work is viewable at night from about 20 miles. 2018 reporting sometimes stretched that: the Chronicle and IEEE Spectrum wrote “up to 30 miles”; a pre-debut KQED dek said 50. Treat those as published claims about how far a tall, lit crown can be noticed — not as a survey of every South Bay backyard.

What a South Bay or Peninsula viewer actually gets, on a clear night, is often simpler than the diary of waves and dancers the artist intended. You get a warm smudge that moves. You get a landmark you did not ask to keep looking at. Fog can swallow it — Nathan Heller’s New Yorker piece on the May 2018 debut is almost a comedy of that fact: the most visible public artwork in the West, briefly invisible. ABC7 and SF Gate covered the same weather joke. Nature still edits the skyline.

The artist’s surname and the South Bay city share a spelling. That is coincidence, not a civic commission from Campbell, California.

Two truths, held in one paragraph. Day for Night is a permanent, commissioned work by a widely exhibited San Francisco artist — not a billboard that snuck onto the roof. And a 1,070-foot crown that can be seen tens of miles away can still feel like skyglow, corporate glare, or aesthetic disgust to people who never bought a ticket. Naming that feeling is literacy. Pretending every resident agrees is not.

A civic diary on the crown

Jim Campbell’s portfolio page is the cleanest technical card: a permanent installation on the 1,070-foot Salesforce Tower; crown dimensions listed as 150 × 100 × 100 feet; computer, custom electronics, cameras, and about 11,000 custom LED fixtures; commissioned by BXP (Boston Properties); building by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects; completed around May 2018. The official tower artwork page matches the LED count and the “top six floors” framing, and describes cameras that watch tide, wind, weather, bird movement, and the daily pulse of people — then play a synopsis of that day at night.

The title is a film term: shoot in daylight so the scene reads as night. Here the city is recorded by day and returned, low-resolution, after dark. KQED’s 2017 preview (updated 2024) has Campbell naming waves at Ocean Beach, trees in Golden Gate Park, pedestrians on Market Street. NBC Bay Area’s Joe Rosato Jr., watching tests from Blooms Saloon on Potrero Hill in May 2018, listed street pavers, Market Street crowds, a soccer game, ocean. The Chronicle’s Sam Whiting heard Campbell reject a fixed street-corner camera as feeling “too much like a surveillance camera.” He wanted “the pulse of the city,” not a security feed. The New York Times California Today brief quoted the same distaste for street scenes and noted prerrecorded Alonzo King LINES Ballet dancers — the sepia figures that keep turning up in debut photographs.

Campbell told KQED he did not want something “spectacular” or “flashy.” He told NBC he was “not designing something for people to go look at,” but something people would “notice when they happen to glance over at it.” He told the Chronicle a million people would see it every night “whether they want to or not,” and called it “the big experiment in the sky.” Those sentences can live next to each other. Ambient civic aura is still a demand on the public dark.

Scheduling, as published in 2018: the Chronicle and IEEE Spectrum both describe a main program from dusk toward midnight, then a quieter constellation of “stars” until sunrise. IEEE’s interview has Campbell saying the late-night mode is “quieter.” This page does not claim a current nightly timetable — operations can change — only what contemporary reporting said the work was designed to do.

Inward LEDs, not Times Square

The design argument against “a Jumbotron on the skyline” is specific, and it is the part of the story that lighting literacy should get right. Campbell’s fixtures do not face the viewer like a scoreboard. They point inward, toward the crown’s perforated aluminum, so the building itself becomes a diffuse screen. KQED has him contrasting Hong Kong towers whose pixels shine out into the sky. IEEE Spectrum calls the difference “images made up of visible dots, like on a Jumbotron,” versus “a wash of color.” SF Gate’s later walk-through of the 62nd-floor control room quotes Campbell’s wish to avoid “the digital Times Square look”: stems on the aluminum shell, two color-changing LEDs per stem facing in, the pale metal doing the glowing.

That is not the same as “no light leaves the tower.” Diffuse reflection still puts photons into the air. A wash visible from tens of miles is, by definition, light that traveled. The inward mount is a real mitigation of harsh pixel glare. It is not a disappearing act. IEEE’s engineering write-up is useful here without turning this essay into a photometric model: Campbell ran the system at a planned fraction of the LEDs’ maximum (he worried it would be too dim; it was not), and the perforated skin needed masks so light would not punch through to the far side.

Art LEDs are not office floor lights. The crown program and the occupied glass below it are different machines. When people complain that “Salesforce Tower is lit,” they are often looking at both: Day for Night on the hat, and ordinary interior lighting on the floors. Keep those sources separate. The next section is about metro skyglow. The energy section is about a Flex Alert week when the two got tangled on purpose.

Skyglow at metro scale

Letting the planet light the way follows DarkSky International’s ordinary vocabulary. Skyglow is the brightening of the night sky over inhabited areas — upward and poorly aimed light scattering in the troposphere (aerosols, humidity, haze) and coming back as a dome. Glare is brightness that hurts seeing. Trespass is light falling where it was not asked for. Clutter is a confusing pile of sources. A single artwork does not invent those categories. A very tall, very visible source sits inside them.

What the crown is

A designed, inward-facing wash meant to read as ambient civic imagery — not a streetlamp aimed at a bedroom, and not an advertising sign in the Planning Code sense.

What it can still do

Add a moving highlight to an already bright metro dome. From the Peninsula or South Bay you may not resolve dancers. You may still notice the skyline has a pulse.

What it is not

The whole of Bay Area skyglow. Street and commercial lighting, vehicle lamps, and indoor spill through glass are the everyday mass. One crown is a landmark inside a larger haze.

The 2016 World Atlas of Artificial Night Sky Brightness (Falchi et al.), cited on the parent desk, estimated that about 80% of the world population — and 99% in the U.S. and Europe — live under light-polluted skies. That is a measurement story. The South Bay version is local and ordinary: from Campbell the Milky Way is usually a rumor; San Jose’s dome is the default; hills toward the Santa Cruz Mountains can be darker; marine-layer moisture can mute or redistribute glow. Atmosphere is why scatter becomes regional. Astronomy is what you lose when the haze wins.

Wildlife and sleep literacy belong on the parent page, not as a diagnosis of this tower. DarkSky and agency writing still matter as context: migratory birds use stars and are drawn off course by urban lighting and brightly lit structures; insects pile up at lamps; short-wavelength night light is a circadian signal in experimental settings. This essay will not claim a bird-mortality count or a sleep study for Salesforce Tower. It will say the unease some South Bay viewers feel is not only taste. It can be ecological literacy looking at a sky that no longer goes fully dark.

What San Francisco’s codes actually do

As of the sources checked in September 2026, San Francisco does not appear to have a standalone dark-sky ordinance of the kind DarkSky International promotes for communities. Outdoor lighting is a stack instead: Planning Code rules (including the public-art requirement that helped produce this work, and separate sign-illumination limits), bird-safe building standards that call for shielded lighting and no uplighting near Urban Bird Refuges, and California Energy Code / CALGreen backlight-uplight-glare (BUG) limits for certain outdoor luminaires. That is not a DarkSky International designation, and it is not a finding about whether Day for Night “passes” a fixture standard. KQED noted the planning department shapes skyline aesthetics but does not oversee the art itself — developer and artist had final say over the hat.

Awe, civic diary, disgust

Campbell himself put the split on the record before the switch stayed on. To the Chronicle: “It will be controversial. Light pollution will be one argument against it.” To NBC: he was not sure whether some people would regard the piece as light pollution; his goal was “an ambient work” that “adds to the aura of the city at night.” To KQED: “What could go wrong is that people don’t want to see an image in the sky. We don’t know. Do you know if you want to or not? I don’t.” That is an artist taking the public dark seriously, not a press kit.

Contemporary coverage already held the other pole. ABC7’s debut story called the tower “a polarizing part of San Francisco’s skyline” and treated the new lights as making it “even more visible to much of the Bay Area.” The New Yorker placed the building in the city’s running argument about techie, ambitious, “perhaps a little grandiose” construction — quoting a Chronicle columnist who had compared the rising obelisk to something you could not avoid. KQED’s longer piece sat in Dolores Park with 48 Hills editor Tim Redmond, who supported the one-percent-for-art fee and still asked what a lighted hat does for a family being priced out of the Mission. Those are civic sentences, not photometry.

From Campbell and the wider South Bay the feeling can be more bodily than a downtown planning debate. You look up from a parking lot or a bedroom window and the northwest skyline has a corporate pulse. Disgust, on this page, means that visceral mix: aesthetic rejection of a branded night landmark, plus the literacy that stars are gone, birds migrate through a lit metro, and sleep is a biological clock — not a petition count, and not a claim that “the city of Campbell hates the art.” Plenty of people find the dancers beautiful. Plenty glance once and forget it. The honest local sentence is that some viewers feel a clean, unfashionable unease, and they are not required to rebrand that feeling as wonder.

It is also not only NIMBY. You can live forty-odd minutes down 280 or 101, have no parcel interest in SoMa, and still resent a skyline that advertises itself after the sun is done. You can love public art and still wish the dark were thicker. Those positions do not cancel Campbell’s craft. They describe the cost of making art that, in his own words, a million people will see whether they want to or not.

Flex Alert, watts, and two kinds of light

Energy talk has followed the crown since before it lit. KTVU (2017) and the Chronicle (2018) both relayed Campbell’s comparison: the installation using on the order of 5,000 watts — “five toaster ovens.” IEEE Spectrum later described running the LEDs at a small fraction of maximum. Those are artist and engineering statements about the artwork, not a utility bill for the whole tower, and not a 2026 audit.

September 2022 tangled the story. During a statewide Flex Alert, the crown displayed a “POWER DOWN” message while many of the building’s office floors — and neighboring high-rises — still showed interior lights. KRON and SFist recorded the social-media pile-on. KRON published Campbell’s reply: the message “was a direct request from (Gov.) Newsom’s office. It ran at a reduced 500 watts but usually uses 5,000 watts.” CAISO’s Flex Alerts are voluntary; a spokesperson told KRON as much. The useful literacy is the split: art LEDs (a few kilowatts, dimmable, used that week as a governor’s signboard) versus occupied-floor lighting (a different load, the thing most people were actually pointing at when they said the tower should go dark). Mixing them into one villain is how a feed stays angry. Separating them is how you stay accurate.

SF Gate reported in 2018 that the tower had enrolled in CleanPowerSF’s 100% renewable product. Renewable supply does not cancel skyglow. Photons still scatter. It only changes how the electrons were generated.

What a South Bay reader can do

You cannot DarkSky-certify someone else’s 1,070-foot crown from a Campbell porch. Do not take this page as a tactic for turning the artwork off. The habits that still work are local, small, and honest about scale.

Five words from the parent essay still travel: useful, targeted, low, controlled, warm. They will not dim Mission Street from Union Avenue. They will keep your own night from adding needless skyglow to the same air.
