Artificial light at night is useful — and it can also be a pollutant. DarkSky defines light pollution as the human-made alteration of outdoor light levels from those occurring naturally. The ordinary vocabulary breaks into a few components — not scare terms, just ways to name what your eyes already notice on a clear suburban night.

Excessive brightness that causes visual discomfort. Unshielded fixtures and blue-rich LEDs punch the eye; older drivers often feel this first. More lumens aimed at your face is not the same as safer seeing.
Light falling where it is not intended or needed — a neighbor’s window, a bedroom, a creek corridor. Often fixable with a shield, aim, or timer rather than a brighter bulb.
DarkSky also lists clutter — bright, confusing groups of sources. The 2016 World Atlas of Artificial Night Sky Brightness (Falchi et al.) estimated that about 80% of the world population, and 99% in the U.S. and Europe, live under light-polluted skies. That is a measurement story, not a vibe.
Night is not empty habitat. Migratory birds use stars and polarized skylight; many insects navigate by the Moon; bats, amphibians, and coastal species time feeding and nesting to darkness. Artificial light at night has no natural analog at city scale — it is a novel cue layered on top of the day/night cycle that evolution expected.
Documented patterns (agency and review literature, not street folklore): birds drawn off course by urban skyglow and brightly lit towers; insects trapped at lamps (with knock-on effects for pollination and food webs); sea-turtle hatchlings disoriented by beachfront lighting. Cities are often stopover points for migrants, so warm, shielded, and timed light matters even far from “wilderness.”
Humans keep a roughly 24-hour circadian clock. Short-wavelength (“blue-rich”) light is especially effective at shifting that clock and suppressing melatonin in experimental settings — which is why DarkSky and many lighting standards push warmer outdoor spectra at night. Indoor screens and bedroom spill from outdoor fixtures are part of the same physical story: light is a biological signal, not only a visibility tool.
Public-health agencies and medical organizations have discussed artificial light at night in the context of sleep disruption and circadian misalignment. Treat that as literacy: reduce unnecessary night exposure where you can, prefer warmer and dimmer outdoor spectra, and ask a clinician about personal sleep or health concerns. From Campbell and the South Bay, the Milky Way is usually a rumor. Valley haze, marine-layer moisture, and dense street / commercial lighting build a persistent skyglow dome over San Jose and the wider metro — the same physics that softens stars from any mid-latitude suburb, just denser. Hills and parks toward the Santa Cruz Mountains can be darker; coastal fog can either mute or redistribute glow depending on the night.
This is literacy, not a zoning rant. Practical local moves look ordinary: shield a porch flood, swap a cool LED for ≤3000 K, put holiday lights on a timer, close curtains so indoor light does not become outdoor trespass, and notice whether a fixture lights the sidewalk or the bedroom across the street.
